- Hi,
-
- Are you one of the no doubt numerous people who ordered some of those 16
- character by 1 line LCD displays from ... that company ... that advertises
- in places like Circuit Cellar Ink? (They sell lots of LCD displays and a
- lot of other assorted neat stuff...)
-
- I those 3 of the 16x1 displays last year for $8 a shot. Good deal... Anyway,
- I was going to replace one today with a (DigiKey bought, expensive) back-lit
- model. As I pulled out the old one, I noticed that it looked awfully similar
- to the new one... especially in that it had two little terminals where the new
- one had its back light connection! Looking closer, it was obvious that the
- display had an electroluminescent back light on it! They sure didn't _TELL_
- me that the display was back-lit when I ordered it, and it makes these
- displays an even better deal than they already are.
-
- Well anyway, the next problem was getting this thing to light up... I needed
- an inverter. Where to get one? Well, I remembered that I had bought a
- back light unit for some out of production LCD TV awhile back from All
- Electronics (they still sell these... I think they're $3.50 or something).
- I found that unit, clipped the leads between the back light that came with
- it and the inverter, and hooked up the inverter to the LCD display. Poof!
- Instant light! The display lit up a very pretty blueish color.
-
- Neato. Needless to say, I'm pretty happy. The blue color of these cheap
- displays looks nicer to me than the green color of the expensive display I
- had just bought.
-
- I don't know if the 16x1 displays that are currently being sold are the
- same ones, but if they are -- $8 + $3.50 for a decent back lit display is
- a great deal! I hope this post helps out some of you out there that have
- these displays and, like me, didn't know that they were backlit.
-
- Have fun...
