- Not quite right. RS-423 does indeed use +-5, with enough tolerance on
- those values that it can run from +-5 power supplies. The RS-232C specs
- allow quite a wide range. The most usual 232 voltage is +-12, because
- those voltages are traditional power-supply voltages and are within the
- 232 specs. However, you do *not* need to go that high. The 232C
- spec only demands that the outputs be between +-5 and +-15 under normal
- load. (The receivers are required to tolerate anything between +-3
- and +-25; it's 3 not 5 for noise margin, and 25 not 15 for compatibility
- with 232B, which let drivers send up to +-25.) +-12 is perfectly
- legal. So is +-9, which has gained popularity because it's about what
- you get by doubling and inverting +5, which most modern 232 drivers do.
- Note that you generally *cannot* meet the spec from +-5 supplies --
- although some scummy manufacturers did it that way anyhow -- because of
- power-supply tolerances and voltage drop in the drivers. You can actually
- get away with a lot in 232, because the receivers are very tolerant.
-
- Old Suns spoke only 423, which is interoperable with 232C *provided* that
- the 232C implementation really does follow the rules. The new ones can
- be switched between 423 and 232C.
