- | I'm considering the purchase of a 486DX2 66MHz PC. The seller (Gateway 2000)
- | advertises that these systems are capable of being configured with a
- | maximum of 64MBytes of main DRAM memory. Investigation has shown that
- | their motherboards have four SIMM slots. Currently, Gateway does not offer
- | the 16MByte SIMMs. In fact, their sales rep sez that they only have the
- | 4MByte SIMMs so if I *did* purchase from them, I could currently only
- | get a maximum of 16MBytes (four slots X 4MByte SIMM) total configured
- | at this time.
-
- If you want to buy the system now with no memory and wait you will be
- able to get the SIMMs in a year of so. No? I didn't think so. You can
- get up to 8MB SIMMs right now, if that won't suit your usage go
- elsewhere. I wouldn't buy a system with that few sockets anyway, but
- that's just my opinion.
-
- The 33/66 is at a premium right now, and if you can wait a month or
- two you will see lower prices and better selection. This doesn't sound
- like a really good idea to me, since you might NEVER be able to get the
- chips you need, or find that the cost of the upgrade is a ripoff.

- I admit that when I was in school I wrote COBOL. But I didn't compile.
