  25.    Ask any guitar player what kind of amplifier they would use and most would
  26.    say tube.  Why?  Because they have a certain sound that semiconductor
  27.    devices just can't produce.

  29. Not true; tube amplifiers sound like they do because of the specific
  30. circuit topology used, the overdrive characteristics, and the low use of
  31. feedback -- not because they use tubes.  (I described this more completely
  32. in an earlier post.)

  34. On the market however, you'll find that all the available tube amps are
  35. subtle variations variations on one design and all transistor amps are
  36. subtle variations on maybe three designs, so yeah, the generalization holds
  37. in that respect.  But note the distinction between what's available on the
  38. market and what's technically possible!  Besides being inaccurate, you're
  39. making an extremely rude insult to the field of electrical engineering when
  40. you say that an amplifier built with a certain active device has to (or
  41. can't) sound a certain way.

  43.    Moving on to effect devices.  Why analog?  Same reason.

  45. In case it wasn't clear, my comments about the musical quality of analog
  46. vs. digital effects were specifically about what's available on the market,
  47. not what's technically possible.
