- I am having major problems trying to program a GAL chip. I'm using a
- ShareWare software/hardware package to get the job done. There is no
- doubt in my mind that the system does work, but it still won't program
- the GAL. I built my own programmer, and wrote software for it. From
- that I can tell, on the scope & all, the signals going to the GAL are
- 100% correct, but it STILL won't program.
- (When I read the chip back, all the bits are cleared)
- I have blown three GAL chips so far.. the last one came a a shock.. I
- placed it in the circuit, issued the command to program it, and for the
- first row, the EDIT voltage was a steady 16.5v .. then came the /STR
- pulse. At that point, the EDIT voltage went down to 2.67v, and stayed
- there.. it has never come back to 16.5v (my three 'blown?' GALs all
- exibit this problem. The 10ms /STR pulse comes from a '221, so it thats
- pretty stable. I'm at my wits end. I have planned to use GALs in my
- next few projects, and this is problem is getting to me (and my pocket
- book).
- I'm using part number PALCE16V8H-25 from AMD. I could find NOTHING on
- these chips at my local store.. nothing (I read that AMD sends the
- programming info ONLY to registered manufactures of PLD programmers)
- ANY speck of help would be a ray of light in my bleak tunnel.
-
- (Quick info: my programmer shuts off Vcc and EDIT before a chip is placed
- in the socket. I cannot see anything wrong with my hardware or software)
