  29. Maybe you're right -- I should have said:

  31. The rights an "individual" may exercise are those rights that the "majority"
  32. has chosen to allow.  If the majority chooses to take away an individual's
  33. right to (say) live, there isn't much the individual can say about it.
  34. Likewise, if the majority has chosen to recognize the rights of the
  35. individual, then the individual has been given some form of leverage to
  36. maintain his individual integrity against the majority.

  38. The point is, "rights" mean nothing by themselves -- they have to be
  39. sanctioned by the "majority" in order to have any power.
