- Thanks to all who responded to my request for information on low-cost,
- beginners telescopes. I have learned a lot in the past few days.
-
- Just wanted to tap your brains for a bit more information. I have heard
- from a couple salesmen and read in the book _The Amateur Astromoner's Handbook_
- that the low-end "serious" telescopes begin at 3" refractors and 6" mirrors.
- However others have told me that a 4.5" mirror is superior to a 3" refractor,
- at least for deep space viewing. As I am looking at several options in the
- $300 range (and size is a restriction ... can't go with anything as bulky as
- a 6" or 8" mirror), this becomes a vital data point. I'm leaning toward the
- reflector but as I have heard multiple negative comments about this size,
- along with those which seem to think an 80mm refractor is superior to the
- 4.5" mirror, I'm a bit confused. I do like the refractor's lower maintenance
- but don't want to pay an extra $70-80 to get something which may (or may not
- depending on whom I'm talking to) have less capability.
-
- Also, hopefully this may be of interest to someone out there, I have found
- wildly deviating opinions of the Vixen line. Ranging from one dealer saying
- he would never carry that garbage, to a salesperson at Orion claiming the
- Vixen 4.5" was both better and cheaper than the Orion 4.5". He and another
- sci.astro subscriber raved about Vixen's price/performance for the beginner.
- Another surprising admission by the Orion rep was that their $299 60mm was
- "optically the same" as the Meade 290, which can be had for $209 elsewhere.
- He did point out the advantage of having a better, larger equatorial mount
- than the Meade's and the 1.25" eyepiece vs the 0.965" (I believe Meade's
- new 60mm goes with 1.25"). I was surprised by Orion being priced higher
- than both Vixen & Meade but claiming few superiorities.
-
- So in summary I have two questions:
-
- A) 4.5" mirror vs 80mm or 90mm refractor. Roughly the same? Or does one
- have a clear superiority (in non-serious amateur applications with
- little to no photography concerns) in viewing.
-
- B) Is Vixen a line to be avoided or is there little difference between them
- and Meade or Orion at this price point ($300-$350)?

- PS Thanks in part to your comments, I did decide not to go with the Edmunds
- 3" mirror & 450mm f.l., after reading a couple books, I decided there was
- too much out there I'd like to see and this scope would never let me do it.
