  15.     I've recently aqcuired a 85 chevy celebrity wagon.
  16.     This car has a 2.8 tranverse mounted v6.
  17.     155,000 mi.
  18.     
  19.     I have noticed a few problems:

  22.     1) check engine light goes on after engine is hot
  23.     
  24.     Actually, this turns out to be a code 42, EST/bypass
  25.     error.
  26.     
  27.     What exactly is the failure ? 
  28.     (no tach signal?/ no spark advance?)
  29.     
  30.     when the engine is hot, the idle will sometimes become
  31.     eratic.
  32.     
  33.     2) when cold (in the morning) engine has
  34.     eratic idle in reverse & stalls (only reverse,
  35.     park/nuetral/drive are OK)
  36.     
  37.     
  38.     3) when driving a constant speed 40mph the
  39.     car will surge on occasion, acceleration/deceleration
  40.     is fine.
  41.     
  42.     4) oil leak around crank pulley
  43.     
  44.     
  45.     are 1/2/3 possibly related ?

  47.     I clared the error codes and made sure only code 42 (EST)
  48.     occurs & there are no other indicated errors.
  49.     
  50.     Drivability is otherwise fine. MPG is 20.
  51.     climbs hills readily.
  52.     
  53.     I have not yet checked if spark advance doen't happen
  54.     when check engine is lit. This would indicate a faulty
  55.     module in the distributor ??

  58.     By the way, the dealer sold us the car for $2500 and told
  59.     us (in writting) that odometer indicated 55,000 original 
  60.     miles.

  62.     The dealer (a used car lot) called us & informed us of 
  63.     the actual milage (once they got the title)  & 
  64.     we'll likely give the car back to them,
  65.     (they said OK to that) instead of taking some adjustment
  66.     money from them.

  69.     I was pretty impressed that they didn't try to sneak
  70.     it by us & were honest & reasonable (so far).
  71.     
  72.     But I'd also like to figure out the above problems,
  73.     so any info would be appreciated.
