- I have an old 81 Datsun 310 with 165K miles. Upon starting after an
- overnight sit white exhaust fumes come out of the tailpipe. After
- warm-up, the visible 'smoke' dies off but I still smell a bad odor
- coming from the tailpipe. The plugs look OK with no evidence of burning
- oil. Other ignition components are OK.
-
- The car runs OK otherwise, but it fails HC emission testing; the CO is
- very low however. Should I attempt changing the idle mixture to fix?
-
- There is one other issue. I've noticed that the timing seems to have
- changed over the years. If I set it at specs it will knock at high
- acceleration. If I set it back a degree or so I can tune out the knock but
- I get a backfire when changing gears.
-
- Any advice would be much appreciated.
