- The Sony MD has a few real advantages over both CDs and Tapes. Whether
- people will consider these advantages worth the cost of switching to
- another new format - we will just have to wait and see. I'll be one of
- the first people in line to buy the new players - and I'll probably buy
- just about every MD pre-recored disk they come out with at first - just
- to let the music companies know that they should invest more money in
- the format.
-
- The fact that there are two new formats - the MD and DCC - will
- certainly slow down the acceptace of either format. Many people will
- wait to see which format wins before spending any money.
-
- The bigest advantage of MD over CD in my opinion is size. Not the size
- of the player, but the size of the media. You can put a couple of MDs
- in your shirt pocket - but you can't carry a single CD that way.
-
- I've taken my portable CD player on lots of trips, and the bigest
- problem isn't the size of the CD player, but the amount of space the
- CDs take up. Because of the size, I usally don't take more than about
- 6 CDs. With the MD, I should be able to take 2 or 3 times as many
- disks. To me, this is a big advantage.
-
- I have a CD player in my car, and once again, the problem is with
- the size of the CDs. I keep my CDs in the compartment between the
- front seats. Along with the other junk I have in there, there's only
- room for a few CDs. But in the same space, I should be able to fit
- 10 or so MDs. The smaller size not only means they take up less
- total volume, but they will also be easier to pack into the crowded
- space. The CDs are almost too large to fit.
-
- I don't expect MDs to replace my CDs in my home system - but my second
- tape player will be replaced with a MD player the minute I find one
- for sale in a local store. And if the pre-recorded MDs are cheaper
- than their CD version I will probably stop buying CDs.
