- Hi,
-
- I have been considering the purchase of a Rotel preamp/tuner. The combined
- preamp/tuner does seem to be a good performer, and is not too expensive.
- The folks at Intersound in Melbourne were able to demonstrate the
- unit for me, and I also had a listen to the ME preamp for comparison
- purposes. The ME seemed to be a bit better with a warmer yet more
- detailed sound quality. However, it was considerably more expensive,
- and a preamp and tuner would be about double the price of the Rotel.
-
- There is a NAD Model 1700 preamp/tuner that is available for about
- $995 at Tivoli Hi-Fi. This also has remote control, as well as
- defeatable graphic equalizer that works in two bands with selectable
- centre frequencies. This is an unusual feature, but seems to work
- quite well in some situations. The NAD 1700 got a good review in the
- US magazine Stereo Review in June 1988. This is a long time ago, and
- since the NAD is a good preamp, I am wondering what will replace it.
- Maybe the styling will be improved, as it could definitely do with
- a face-lift. Can anyone shed some light on what NAD might be offering
- in the near future?
-
- While at Tivoli Hi-Fi, I also had a listen to the Hafler Model 945 tuner/
- preamp. It sounded quite good, and there was not really any difference
- in sound quality that a short listen could show up. The price if the
- Hafler preamp/tuner is $1500, which is quite high. Also, there is only
- a 1-year warranty, which is a bit of a worry. Any comments on the
- performance of the Hafler preamp/tuner welcome.
-
- Also, I visted Secher Audio, and they had a tuner/preamp called the
- Parasound C/PT-1000R. It seems like a very nice unit, and the preamp
- stages uses discrete FETs, and high quality resistors. Unfortunately
- this was not available for audition at the time. Price is around $1350,
- which puts it in the upper envelope of my budget. Supposedly the
- Parasound company is a lower-cost version of Levinson equipment,
- designed by John Curl for the lower end of the high-end equipment
- market. The warranty is 3-years, which is quite good, assuming the
- local importer is still around if things go wrong.
-
- Has anyone any comments on the Parasound preamp tuner? What is the price
- in the USA, so that I can compare value for money? Are there any real
- sonic benefits to the use of FETs? If anything, the Parasound preamp/
- tuner has got a poorer noise performance than the Rotel, and much
- worse than the NAD. Seems to be a waste partnering a high S/N ratio
- CD player with a preamp whose noise specs are not as good.
-
- There are also preamps (only) from Denon and Yamaha that are available
- here, as well as from Onkyo. What sort of performance can I expect
- from them?
-
- Any comments are welcome.
