- 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- San Diego Supercomputer Center
- San Diego, California
-
- This Fall CERFnet will begin a series of technology update seminars to keep
- our members informed of developments in the networking environment.
-
- The first in the series will be held on September 23, 1992, covering both
- SMDS and Frame Relay. Each service will be discussed in detail by
- instructors who are industry specialists with extensive knowledge of the
- topic. At the end of the day both instructors will participate in a
- question and answer period and comparison of the two services.
-
- David Piscitello, a member of the Broadband Data Services division at
- Bellcore, will spend the first half of the day discussing SMDS. The
- technical overview will include information on standards, management, and
- the physical layer. Components and availability will be discussed, and the
- current applications will be covered including a picture of where SMDS is
- going.
-
- Marie Beven, Product Manager with Sprint, will continue after lunch with
- the basics of Frame Relay technology, including a discussion of IP and OSI
- over Frame Relay. Next, availability from the various vendors will be
- presented, including current status and a look into the future. Specific
- examples of how Frame Relay is being used in corporate environments will be
- highlighted.
-
- The afternoon will conclude with a 45 minute question and answer period
- with both instructors available to compare the offerings and the
- applications each offering may have in your own environment.
-
- About the instructors:
-
- Marie Beven is a Product Manager in Data Networking Services with Sprint,
- where for the past eighteen months her focus has been on Frame Relay. Marie
- has also worked extensively on technologies such as X.25 and ATM/SONET, and
- on SprintLink, Sprint's IP networking service.
-
- David M. Piscitello is a member of the Broadband Data Services division at
- Bellcore, where he concentrates on SMDS feature refinements, Customer
- Network Management, and operation of internetworking and routing protocols
- over SMDS. Prior to joining Bellcore, he worked for Unisys (formerly
- Burroughs) on proprietary data network architectures, TCP/IP, and OSI.
