- -=> Quoting Gary Warren to Robert Bowes V <=-
- Hi Gary I must differ with you on the broad generalized statement you made.
-
- Finally and MOST importantly, it is now established
- GW> that ANY charity, no matter how holy or sincere the motives, only
- GW> devotes 35-45 percent of its gross contributions to its stated aims.
- GW> The rest goes right toward overhead and administrative costs.
-
- While this is true about a lot of agencies it is not true of all. I
- am on the board of directors for the Portage County Easter Seals
- Society and I see the total income and expenditures of that agency
- monthly and in a yearly breakdown. Last year we raised $232,900.
- $68,562 for salaries of which $9,000 went to contract employees.
- Contract employees were the speech and audiologists and PT. We pay
- them for the clinic they run for us and for there direct client
- services. So basically I would not consider that as agency staff
- money, but direct service to client. We spent approxamately another
- $40,270 most of wich went for the mortgage and insurance on the
- building. The building is a one storey simple building. When they
- built their building they decided to put the bulk of it into a
- hall. The hall has a bar and a kitchen. In the back of the building
- is storage area so we can run a durable medical loan and assist
- program and the acutual staff area is a small area without seperate
- offices.
-
- The rental of the hall and the bingo games that we sponser there
- generated $141,632. So I don't feel that they have over spent to
- purchase a building and in a few years the mortgage will be paid
- off and then more will go to client services. Another $3000 went
- for dues to National Easter Seal and Ohio State Easter Seals. So
- our expenditure for the agency was $102,832 which is roughly 44%.
- Almost an exact reversal of your statement. So Please be carefull
- when making such broad accusations

- If she really wants to know all she has to do is contact IRS and
- ask to see the forms 990-PF that they have filed for what ever year
- she wants. These are the forms that are public record and IRS will
- give you copies but you will have to pay a fee for them.
-
- I too know of agencies that really stick it to the clients and
- donars, in fact I turned down a token (and I do mean token)
- position to be on the board of a local Independent Living Center.
- They had to have so many disAbled people on board to be in
- compliance with their charter. This agency had been in existance
- for 5 years and didn't even have an accessable office. They
- received all kinds of money from grants and United Way. What they
- did with the money I have no idea because I was never able to find
- any service that they were providing. And of course being on their
- board would have done me no good because I couldn't attend board
- meeting at there offices.
