- I'm an officer in a small volunteer fire department. We run a little different
- than other departments in our area - all of our active firefighter have their
- gear in their personnel vehicle, so we respond straight to the scene. The first
- driver to the barn takes the first due rig, second driver the 2nd due etc etc.
-
- Not all of our members are "interior firefighters" some of the older guys are
- pump operators other members may not be fully trained or don't want to do that
- part of the job for what ever reason. We are still happy to have them because
- that less that I have to do.
-
- Our general rule is only interior firefighters go in - they must be Scotted-up
- and have a partner who is also Scotted-up with them. We also have a rule that
- the person who drivers the engine to the scene stays with the engine until
- relived by another qualified driver/pump operator.
-
- So in order for our department to start any type of interior firefighting we
- require a minimum of 3 members, 2 must be interior firefighters and the 3rd a
- pump operator. If after a few minutes no body else is on the scene or signed
- on as responding the pump operator will call for mutual-aid.
-
- I however do see the other side - I've been in for 10 years now and never
- fought a fire with less than 10 members a location, and when we have a low
- turnout I know how much work I end up doing and I'd never be able to run back
- to back calls.
-
- Also for a carrier department there is no additional man power coming unless
- you make a 2nd alarm. A 2nd alarm could mean OT and I know how much heat the
- management at my office get when there is OT needed.
-
- The NFPA standards have been a big help in my department as a method to get
- our fire district to obtain the best possible equipment to do the job, my area
- of the country has money - we don't have a lot of volunteers with time. Other
- parts of the country may have more volunteers but no money.
-
- I feel that the standards while very good are not achievable by everybody so
- they'll lose there effectiveness.
-
- my 2 cents
