-
- While I don't know very much about a first/second grade mix, I was
- in a 2nd/3rd mix in second grade, And 3rd/4th and 5th/6th mixes third
- through sixth grades. Second grade was a regular class, 3rd through
- 6th were the gifted classes in my school. The way they did it in the
- gifted classes was they had a two year turnaround of material to
- be covered (at least I think they did) because the only reteaching that
- fourth graders had to See the third graders go through was cursive
- handwriting, which was taught in all third grades. The gifted clases
- weren't split up for any academic subjects that I remember. I probably
- benefitted a great deal from them, because although they were easy to me,
- I always enjoyed them and looked forward to school, academically, untill
- high school when I was put back into normal classes instead of honors
- because nobody made sure I got into honors or AP where I belonged (this
- is a sore subject with me). I still did well enough to get into college
- on my test scores, which is good because boring classes never inspired
- me to work at all, so my grades were mediocre.
-
- I'd say the split gifted education was the best in grade school, because we
- also had the same teacher for two years. (the teachers in gifted classes
- (is that gifted teachers? :) always had a student teacher in class most of
- the day, unlike the other classes, which only had a student teacher every
- couple of years.
-
- I hope this helps your friend make the best decision for their child.
