  29.     it is this "show" that I am hoping to help publicize here.

  66. APOLITICAL INTELLECTUALS

  68. One Day
  69. the apolitical intellectuals
  70. of my country
  71. will be interrogated
  72. by the simplest of our people.
  73. They will be asked what they did
  74. when their nation died out
  75. slowly, like a sweet fire,
  76. small and alone.
  77. No one will ask them
  78. about their dress,
  79. their long lunch breaks,
  80. no one will want to know
  81. about their sterile combats
  82. with "the idea of the nothing"
  83. no one will care about
  84. their higher financial learning.
  85. They won't be questioned
  86. on Greek mythology,
  87. or regarding their self-disgust
  88. when someone within them
  89. begins to die
  90. the coward's death.
  91. They'll be asked nothing
  92. about their absurd justifications,
  93. born in the shadow
  94. of the total lie.
  95. On that day
  96. the simly men will come.
  97. Those who had no place
  98. in the books and poems
  99. of the apolitical intellectuals,
  100. but daily delivered
  101. their bread and milk,
  102. those who mended their clothes,
  103. those who drove their cars,
  104. who cared for their dogs and gardens
  105. and worked for them, and they'll ask:
  106. "What did you do when the poor
  107. suffered, when tenderness
  108. and life burned out in them?"
  109. Apolitical intellectuals of my sweet country,
  110. you will not be able to answer.
  111. A vulture of silence
  112. will eat your gut.
  113. Your own misery will pick at your soul.
  114. And you will be mute in your shame.
