  24. At the request of the CDHG (Comision de Derechos Humanos de
  25. Guatemala), member of our network, we call upon you to intervene
  26. URGENTLY on behalf of the following situation in Guatemala.
  27. Brief description of the situation
  28. Recent information received from the CDHG draws attention to the
  29. detention and forced disappearance of the young Juana Lorenza AJCOP
  30. VELAZQUEZ, a student of the Instituto Normal Mixto Juan de Leon
  31. (school), in Santa Cruz del Quiche, department of El Quiche.
  32. According to the information, the young girl was detained on 24
  33. August 1992 in Santa Cruz del Quiche, by three unidentified armed men
  34. who took her to an unknown destination and since then there has been
  35. no news of her.
  36. Action requested
  37. Please write to the authorities in Guatemala without delay urging
  38. them to adopt all the necessary measures to locate AJCOP VELAZQUEZ,
  39. release her immediately and guarantee her life and physical and
  40. psychological integrity at all times. Insist that they implement the
  41. appropriate measures in order to put an end to violations of human
  42. rights and fundamental freedoms in the country. Inform the
  43. authorities in your respective countries, the UN, the OAS, the
  44. European Community and all other intergovernmental and
  45. non-governmental organisations, urging them to intervene so that
  46. appropriate measures are adopted and implemented, both at the
  47. national and international levels, to ensure the effective respect
  48. for collective and individual human rights in the country at all
  49. times.
