- CUBA SOLIDARITY BRIEFS
-
- Solidarity with Cuba in India ...
-
- Under pressure from the U.S. government, India's capitalist
- government has stopped shipping rice to socialist Cuba. But
- organizations of India's workers and oppressed have responded
- with a massive show of solidarity. In February, the 14th Congress
- of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) launched a campaign to
- collect 10,000 tons of grain and medicine for Cuba.
-
- People's Democracy, the CPI(M) newspaper, says the response to
- this call has been "overwhelming." Collections have been carried
- out by labor unions and organizations of women, peasants,
- students and artists in states throughout the country. The
- largest collections were in West Bengal, where the main peasant
- organization announced plans to collect donations from 1.6
- million rural families. The West Bengal Railway Hawkers Union and
- other labor organizations have joined the drive. A Cuban ship
- will arrive in Calcutta at the end of September to pick up the
- supplies.
-
- A National Committee for Solidarity with Cuba has been set up,
- comprising well-known artists, intellectuals and film stars. And
- the proceeds from an upcoming soccer series between Vietnam and
- West Bengal will be donated to Cuba.
-
- ... and Turkey
-
- Thousands of workers and progressives in Turkey have signed
- petitions expressing solidarity with socialist Cuba and
- protesting the U.S. blockade. The petition campaign was organized
- by Iktidar (Power), a working class newspaper. The petitions will
- be presented to the United Nations by representatives of the
- International Peace for Cuba Appeal.
