- EARTHQUAKE JESSE
-
- On Sept. 2, a major earthquake under the Pacific Ocean occurred
- 30 miles off the west coast of Nicaragua. The ensuing tidal waves
- wreaked havoc along 200 miles of the country's coast. Nicaraguan
- officials said at least 116 people were killed, and thousands are
- now homeless.
-
- However, two weeks before this happened, another disaster hit the
- country, although from a source that's unnatural as they come.
- We're referring to the infamous right-wing senator from North
- Carolina, Jesse Helms. At Helms' initiative, the U.S. suspended
- $116 million in foreign aid to the Nicaraguan government.
-
- The reason Helms gave for this action was that current Nicaraguan
- President Violeta Chamorro--who was elected in 1990 with the
- total backing of Washington--has "not moved far enough" in
- getting rid of the popular Sandinistas. What angers Helms and
- Bush in particular is the control the Sandinistas still have over
- the Army and police.
-
- So, when the tidal waves hit Nicaragua, the U.S. sent a measly $5
- million in "assistance." The other money is still frozen, pending
- Chamorro taking action that is more pleasing to her U.S. masters.
- What this means is that in effect the U.S. is using the natural
- disaster in Nicaragua as a way of punishing the country even
- more. The Bush administration is telling Chamorro: "We're the
- real rulers here. We put you in, and you better fall completely
- in line."
-
- And this is how the U.S. treats their own allies.
