  28. What is the first machine gun attack of the week at Queensbridge
  29. Houses in Long Island City, Queens is also the second shooting of the
  30. weekend at that crime plagued Housing Project.

  32. Friday September 11, 1992 saw the first shooting of the weekend which
  33. resulted in one victim. A gun was recovered by the Police. Further
  34. details were issued at that time on a computer bulletin board.

  36. Sunday September 13, 1992, multiple calls were received by 9-1-1
  37. reporting shooting going on at Queensbridge Houses. Tenants reported
  38. bursts of machine gun fire. Several locations were given in the
  39. multiple calls. There were reports of several victims, but the
  40. arrival of police found nothing. Finally a victim was found inside
  41. 40-14 10 Street in a second floor apartment. The victim who had been
  42. hit in the torso had not wanted to wait outside for medical
  43. attention.

  45. It is unknown how many victims there really were, as parties to
  46. shoot-outs are sometimes transported out of the area by
  47. collaborators.

  49. It is known that police made several arrests and as some tenants were
  50. going to bed, police were searching the roof top of 41-16 12 Street
  51. for more perpetrators with guns.

  53. Thankfully, there has not been a publicly reported homicide at
  54. Queensbridge Houses since August 26, 1992 when a well dressed murder
  55. victim with shirt and tie was shot in the head three times in a
  56. hallway at 41-11 10th Street. The building had an unlocked lobby
  57. door. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development has stated
  58. in a letter that the New York City Housing Authority leaves lobby
  59. doors unlocked as a form of punishment for tenants.

  61. The elevator at 41-10 10th Street had been in the process of
  62. renovations since early July and some tenants took the elevator of
  63. the crime scene building to the top and then crossed the roof to
  64. 41-10 10th Street. Some tenants allege that this was done at the
  65. suggestion of Queensbridge Houses Manager Scott Krikawa. Krikawa was
  66. removed following that murder.

  68. Queensbridge Houses tenants have voted for the Fruit of Islam as a
  69. paid security force. The New York City Housing Authority was
  70. considering this until, the ADL of B'nai B'rith sent out letters of
  71. opposition to the New York City Housing Authority and to Jack Kemp,
  72. Secretary of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development in
  73. Washington. Now HUD and the NYC HA refuse to discuss this any further
  74. and the carnage continues.

  76. Perhaps if there was better accounting of money sent to the NYC HA
  77. for crime fighting in the projects, the tenants wouldn't be seeking
  78. outside security assistance. HUD employees allege that Kemp is
  79. mismanaging the HUD budget.
