- ***<NO BETTER OPTION? INDUSTRIAL WOMEN WORKERS IN
- BANGLADESH.> Hameeda Hossain, Roushan Jahan, and Salma
- Sobhan. University Press Ltd., Red Crescent Bldg., 114
- Motijheel C/A, Dhaka 1000, Bangladesh. 1990. 126 pp. Tk.
- 250.00. Cloth. Photographs, appendixes, bibliography, index,
- maps, tables.
-
- Dubbed an "exploration" by its authors, this study examines
- women's work in the industrial and service sectors in
- Bangladesh. In particular, it addresses this question: Does
- women's participation in the market as cheap labor really
- contribute either to alleviating poverty or to women's
- emancipation?
-
- The six packed-with-fact chapters explore the history of
- women's work in Bangladesh, the legal framework for
- industrial labor, the pressures that have pushed women into
- employment and the options open to them, a profile of
- individual women workers, the legal procedures pertinent to
- labor and workers' access to them, and the lifestyles and
- family commitments of women workers.
-
- The study was done in Dhaka, the main industrial base for
- the country. The authors surveyed management and workers
- from fifteen different types of industrial enterprises,
- including jute, textile, pharmaceutical, rice, plastics, and
- garment manufacture. They made use of structured interviews
- and written questionnaires with both management and workers.
- Among the obstacles they had to overcome were suspicion from
- one side or the other, time constraints--women work 18-hour
- days counting home and factory responsibilities together--
- and fear of repercussions on the part of the workers.
-
- The authors have long been active in women's issues
- pertinent to development, law, industry, and labor. Their
- careful study adds notably to the body of serious research
- in the fields of labor rights, women's rights, and human
- rights.
