  26.      Recently published figures show that religious 
  27. discrimination in Northern Ireland is rising again. Male 
  28. Catholics are now 2.6 times likely to be unemployed as 
  29. Protestants--back to the position they had in 1971, after a 
  30. period of slight improvement. 
  31.      The male youth unemployment rate, which is high for 
  32. protestant workers at 19.6 percent, is double for Catholics with 
  33. a staggering rate of 39 percent in the 16-25 age group. Catholics 
  34. are only half as likely as Protestants to be in managerial or 
  35. professional jobs, and are over-represented in semi and unskilled 
  36. manual labor. 
  37.      To challenge discrimination, the government in 1989 
  38. introduced a new 'Fair Employment Act' which offers high levels 
  39. of compensation to workers who have been discriminated against. 
  40.      In a recent case Mary Duffy, a temporary laundry worker who 
  41. was refused employment because of discrimination secured 25,000 
  42. pounds sterling in compensation for injury to feelings. This is 
  43. the largest amount ever awarded under this heading.
