- According to press reports here in New York, 95 people -- most prominent
- being Arthur Ashe -- were arrested in front of the White House,
- Wednesday Sept. 9. There were over 500 people, mainly African Americans
- and Haitians at the demonstration.
-
- The protest was called to say "Haitians are locked out because they're
- Black and want true democracy with the unconditional return to power of
- President Jean Bertrand Aristide." The call for the demo also said
- "Bush's refugee policy is racist."
-
- The sponsors of the demo were TransAfrica, NAACP and the Coalition of
- Haitian Organizations.
-
- I think it is very significant that such a large and militant demonstra-
- tion took place at the start of the national election campaign; the
- activists who were arrested, or even present, were saying that voting is
- not enough -- to change policy you have to get into the streets.
