- Solidarity makes anti-gay boss change his tune
-

- San Diego
-
- Gas station attendant Tom Delp was forced to quit his job at the
- Unocal 76 in the heart of Hillcrest, San Diego's lesbian and gay
- community, after three months of anti-gay harassment. Some
- backward, bigoted men who worked at the gas station with Delp had
- waged a terror campaign against him, one even putting a knife to
- his throat.
-
- The boss ignored Delp's complaints about verbal and physical
- harassment. And when the group Queer Nation organized pickets to
- challenge the anti-gay campaign, the station's owners issued a
- defiant statement denying the charges and calling Delp a
- "disgruntled" worker.
-
- Five days and thousands of dollars in lost gas sales later, their
- tune changed.
-
- Gays and straights alike refused to cross the daily picket line
- to buy gas. The sounds of car horns beeping support for the
- boycott could be heard for blocks.
-
- The settlement came on Aug. 16, after six days of picketing. It
- was an important victory for the lesbian and gay community, and
- for the workers' struggle.
-
- Delp didn't want his job back. But the station owners agreed to
- write a letter of apology to the lesbian and gay community and
- send it to all the local media. The anti-gay workers who had
- harassed and threatened Delp didn't recant or apologize, so they
- were fired.
-
- The gas station management also made a $1,000 donation to the
- local Lesbian and Gay Community Center, and agreed to require all
- bosses and workers to attend sensitivity training sessions at the
- center.
