  35. Peru:  The assassination of union leader Pedro Orellana has been 
  36. condemned by the the ICFTU and its Regional Organisation for the 
  37. Americas, ORIT.  Mr Orellana, a leader of the Peruvian national 
  38. centre, the CGTP, died after he was shot by masked gunmen  on August 
  39. 27.  A colleague was seriously injured in the attack.  The union 
  40. internationals have also condemned the attempted abduction, on August 
  41. 27, of Juan Luna, general secretary of the ICFTU-affiliated CTP.  The 
  42. assailants used a gun to try and force Mr Juan Luna into an unmarked 
  43. car, but he managed to escape.

  45. El Salvador:  The man who murdered union leader Salvador Ivan Ramirez 
  46. at the end of July (see Telex News 24) has been identified, according 
  47. to a report carried by the newspaper La Prensa on August 21. 
  48. According to the paper, the investigation into the murder has heard 
  49. witness reports identifying David Armando Flores as the suspected 
  50. murderer.

  52. South Africa:  Union fears that their leaders are being targetted by 
  53. hit squads in some areas of Natal were raised by the murder on August 
  54. 27 of Sam Nyawo, a local Cosatu representative.  On the same day, the 
  55. house of another Cosatu regional chairperson, Bheki Ntuli came under 
  56. fire.  According to the National Union of Metalworkers' of South 
  57. Africa (NUMSA), 18 Numsa members in one town have been murdered over 
  58. the past year.

  60. Ghana:  Addressing delegates at the Congress of the Ghana Trades Union 
  61. Congress  (GTUC) on August 27-29, ICFTU representative Andrew Kailembo 
  62. underlined that "the particularly difficult time facing African 
  63. workers made the prominent role of the Ghana TUC in the struggle for 
  64. genuine democracy and social justice more vital than ever". The 
  65. congress elected C.A. Agyei as secretary general and adopted a 
  66. statement calling for the unconditional release of Chakufwa Chihana, 
  67. the detained Malawian union leader.

  69. Germany:  Germany's Chancellor, Helmut Kohl, top leaders of the 
  70. country's traditional parties, and senior representatives of trade 
  71. unions and economic and social institutions  attended the celebrations 
  72. organised on September 2 in Bonn by the German trade union federation 
  73. (DGB) to mark the 60th birthday of DGB President Heinz-Werner Meyer. 
  74. ICFTU General Secretary Enzo Friso was also among the DGB guests and 
  75. had a brief meeting with Mr Meyer to discuss issues of common concern 
  76. to both the DGB and the ICFTU.

  78. Ukraine:  Five independent unions in Ukraine, organised outside the 
  79. ex-official structures,  came out on strike on September 2 in protest 
  80. at the government's failure to sign collective bargaining agreements. 
  81. Airports, mines and railways were reported to be at a standstill on 
  82. the first day of the strike.  The unions, under the umbrella of the 
  83. Ukrainian consultative council which they set up earlier this year, 
  84. have been in negotiation with management on collective bargaining for 
  85. the last six weeks, but claim that all their demands have been 
  86. ignored.  Prior to the strike, union leaders observed a hunger strike 
  87. for nearly two weeks.

  89. Ecuador:  Economic measures recently announced by Ecuador's government 
  90. are likely to make matters worse, acccording to the ICFTU-affiliated 
  91. national centre, the CEOSL.  The union is reported to have called on 
  92. the government to set up a tripartite commission to examine the issue 
  93. of privatisation, a major component of the government's package. 
  94. According to CEOSL president Jose Chavez, "there will not be peace in 
  95. the country if the government adopts measures against the workers".
