  23.     NAIROBI, Kenya - The U.N.
  24. environment chief said Italian
  25. companies plan to profit from Somalia's
  26. chaos by shipping toxic waste there,
  27. according to a report Sunday.
  28.     The move further threatens health
  29. in the devastated nation.

  31.     The claims involving toxic waste by
  32. Mostafa Tolba, head of the
  33. Nairobi-based U.N. Environmental
  34. Program, were reported in the
  35. English-language Sunday Nation
  36. newspaper and confirmed by an aide.
  37.     Tolba said Italian companies are
  38. building two incinerators to be
  39. installed in Somalia that would handle
  40. at least two 550,000-ton shipments of
  41. toxic waste next year for an estimated
  42. profit of $4 million to $6 million.
  43.     Tolba said that to protect his
  44. sources he wouldn't identify the
  45. Italian companies or say where they
  46. planned to ship the waste.
  47.     The Italian companies are taking
  48. advantage of Somalia's lack of
  49. government and general instability,
  50. said Tolba.
  51.     Tolba reportedly made his remarks
  52. during an address Friday at the
  53. International Center for Research in
  54. Agroforestry.
  55.     Tolba said the dumping could
  56. aggravate the destruction of Somalia's
  57. ecosystem and threaten further loss of
  58. life in the ravaged nation, where tens
  59. if not hundreds of thousands already
  60. have died from the combined effects of
  61. drought and warfare.
  62.     It wasn't possible to get comment
  63. from Tolba, whose office wouldn't
  64. release his home telephone number.
  65.     Italian government officials in
  66. Rome also weren't immediately available
  67. for comment.
