- NDF reps to visit Canada this October
- OTTAWA -- Representatives of the National Democratic
- Front are visiting Canada this October as part of a
- campaign by Philippine solidarity groups in the
- country to support a genuine peace process in the
- Philippines.
- The visitors will be going around several cities
- to share the results of their recent exploratory
- talks held August 31 to September 1 with an emissary
- of the Philippine government at The Hague,
- The Netherlands. They will be addressing a number
- of parliamentarians, non-government organizations
- and other solidarity groups and meeting with the press.
- They will elaborate on the NDF's agenda for an enduring
- peace.
- Visiting Canada this October are Luis Jalandoni,
- NDF Vice Chairperson for International Affairs;
- Coni Ledesma, Executive Director of the NDF
- International Office; and former trade union lawyer
- Byron Bocar, NDF representative for Western Europe.
- In their exploratory talks, NDF and Philippine
- government representatives agreed to recommend
- to their respective principals the holding of formal
- peace negotiations to resolve the armed conflict
- and attain "a just and lasting peace."
- In a communique released September 1, they said
- the peace negotiations shall be held "without
- preconditions, and in accordance with mutually
- acceptable principles including national sovereignty,
- democracy and social justice." Preparatory to the
- formal talks they would also recommend for the
- substantive agenda to include "human rights
- and international humanitarian law, socio-
- economic reforms, political and constitutional
- reforms, end of hostilities and disposition
- of forces."
- The Network for A Just and Lasting Peace in the
- Philippines (NJLP), an aggrupation of Philippine
- solidarity groups across Canada, is launching the
- campaign in the country to support the current peace
- process in the Philippines. The groups aim to inform
- the Canadian public of the problems that lie at the
- root of the armed conflict in the Philippines,
- and draw support for a peace based on "national
- sovereignty and independence, people's democracy
- and empowerment, respect and promotion of human
- rights, and equitable, sustainable and ecology-
- friendly development."
