-
- OpenWindows 3.0.1 will support Type 1 fonts under Solaris 2, as I
- understand it.
-
- TypeMaker understands URW IKARUS format fonts. These are generally the
- highest quality fonts around; Sun's decision to use such high-quality data
- as a starting point for their type, plus an auto-hinter that's probably
- the best around, has resulted in OpenWindows having excellent fonts.
-
- Compare bitmaps between OpenWindows 3, Mac Sysem 7 (TrueType), Microsoft
- Windows 3.1 (TrueType), Adobe ATM (Type 1), X11R5 (Speedo), and you'll see
- what I mean.
-
- Having said all that, I am not aware of any public-domain F3 fonts, nor any
- software to convert trueType or Type 1 fonts to F3. The F3 spec is availble
- free of charge from Sun, and - especially when Solaris moves to the 386 - I
- shouldn't be surprised to see such software in the future. Getting anything
- like Sun's quality of hinting would be an interesting challenge.
