- Summary: dxsession does not appear to use BIND correctly.

- I'm experiencing some problems with dxsession and the BIND name service.
-
- We are using prioritised 3 level hostname resolution:
- 1. Minimal /etc/hosts file
- 2. Yellow Pages to distribute IP for hosts on same sub-net
- 3. BIND name service to distribute IP for more distant hosts
- I imagine this is a very common configuration at large sites?
-
- I previously had some distant hosts registered within the YP system (level 2)
- but due to network reorganisation within the university their IP addresses
- are changing (hourly it would seem!) Since our outdated YP entries were
- becoming a liability, I removed them allowing address resolution to be
- peformed by BIND (level 3). This now works fine with ping/rlogin/finger etc.
-
- Several of these distant hosts were previously registered in the Security
- menu of dxsession allowing them to act as X clients to my server. They
- disappeared from the list when they were removed from the YP service and
- I am unable to register them again. When I attempt to do so, I get an error
- of the form "Not a Registered host name". Sometimes when I've tried this,
- dxsession has crashed unceremoniously logging me out.
-
- When I do address resolution manually using nslookup and then enter the
- distant IP address in its raw form into Security it is both accepted and
- allows the client to connect. No problem.
-
- My local DEC Help line say that they get the same behaviour, but have been
- unable to suggest a fix or indicate if it will fixed in the next revision.
-
- Is this a well documented bug?? Does anyone have any patches/fixes??
- If it cannot be fixed it would seem to be a serious weakness in the
- current UWS release!! Any suggestions would be very welcome.
