  11. DECsystem 5500, running Ultrix 4.2 (plain, not A), configured for and
  12. has been happily running with 64 ttys. Lots of people running lots of
  13. shells via xterm or telnet.

  15. Today, we're out of ttys. I went through /dev/tty?? and it looks to me
  16. like 22 of those ttys are not currently being used. (many of these are
  17. owned by root, permissions 666, haven't been modified for 3 weeks (nor
  18. has the associated pty), and there are no processes running associated
  19. with that tty)

  21. Is there a known Ultrix 4.2 bug whereby free ttys are misplaced? This
  22. is the longest our machine has ever been up, and it's heavily used, so
  23. I could see a not-very-frequent problem accreting over 5 weeks.

  25. (I seem to remember this was discussed a few weeks ago, but I don't
  26. have the articles any more. Any help would be appreciated)
