-
- Personally, I've had nothing but trouble with LAT printing with Ultrix
- patches/OS upgrades/printcap hacks notwithstanding...
-
- On the other hand, VMS LAT print queues have always worked flawlessly.
-
- Our local solution: We acquired Dietmar Bergs VMS LPD daemon for UCX, hacked
- it to support our environment, and now let the VMS machines do all the printing
- and have the LAT stuff work flawlessly.
-
- The advantages include the fact that if you have the scriptprinter software
- installed on your vax/vms machine, you can take advantage of all the
- cool queue stuff, duplex, 2up, nup, postscript/ansi, etc. stuff that
- the scriptprinter software can do, from your ultrix machine, just by
- defining some queues.
-
- Muchos better than the braindamaged lpd software DEC supplies that can't
- even take advantage of the features in all the DEC printers.
-
- For anybody wanting to mix queues like this, it seems to be the way to go.
- It's working great for us, and relieved me of a lot of headache of messing
- with Ultrix LAT mumbo-jumbo.
-
- Something you might want to look at... I could probably make our hacked
- version of VMSLPD available, basically, we stripped out all the UID mapping
- stuff, and added in some code to do accounting... Nothing major. If
- there's enough interest, I'll send it out. Send me mail if you want it.
-
- It does require UCX, although ports to CMU TCP/IP would be cool. It's easy
- to install, and you can have the source, and do any other mods you want.
- It is missing the lprm command, (we stripped it out, you could put it back),
- and every once in a while, it hangs the LPD on ultrix, which is a bug Marcus
- hasn't figured out yet, but all-in-all, it works very well.
