- Hi Netters,
-
- Thanks to all the people who wrote me on this subject. There seem to be
- quite a few problems with GNU 'finger' on ULTRIX. The solutions to this
- currently seem to be either using the icsi release, or the newest
- version 1.35, which appears to have been released very recently.
-
- I have built version 1.35, now, and it seems to work after a few fixes.
- Here's what I had to do (besides the steps in support/INSTALL):
-
- - before 'make' is run, check the src/.*dir and target/.*dir files for
- pathnames like "/usr/local/etc/fingerdir/foo". Delete the double
- quotes.
- - you may have to edit support/install-finger, if you do not have gawk.
- - edit /etc/inetd.conf. delete 'nobody' from fingerd and cfingerd lines.
-
- I have included the essential parts of the messages I got on this
- subject below.
-
- Have fun!
- - Apostolos

- If you get gnu finger to work, I would appreciate some info on how. I had
- the same problem as you with "ualarm". I kludged some sort of fix and then
- did "make install" (the results of which didn't please me greatly, GNU
- finger clobbered all sorts of files), after which "finger" worked for
- the local machine but would not accept any external connections.

-
- I tried to install this a while back (also used sleep(1)), but when
- eventually got sommething working, got lots of "unaligned access" messages,
- and the client-side was crashing; gave up at this stage.
- There is also a bug where the port-number is specified (forget which file) ...
- there is a missing 'htons()'.

-
- I also couldn't get it running here under Ultrix 4.2a. It compiles
- fine but never collects any information. If you get any responses,
- can you forward them to me.

-
- your best bet is to not try to build GNU finger for awhile - version
- 1.0, which you probably have, is really buggy. Someone's working on
- the code now and is anticipating a working release.

-
- One can get the ICSI version of GNUfinger, which fixes the ualarm
- problem, among many other things. I can attest that it works fine
- under Ultrix.
-
- You can get it by ftp from icsi.berkeley.edu in /pub/stolcke.

- A new version (1.35) was released yesterday. I built it without much
- trouble on DEC Ultrix and Sun SPARC machines.
