- i hope you have a recent backup.
-
- well, here are some things that you can try. I've hosed not one, but two
- machines by torching the root acct in some fashion, and in both cases, i've
- had to reload the operating system, or part of it.
-
- If it's just the password that's messed up, you should be able to boot into
- a single user mode. Check your manual on how to do this. If you have
- a corrupted password file...a case being that there is no root acct at all,
- single user mode will not work. You can check this by trying to log in
- remotely. Ping works, but telnet and rlogin don't (there's no root acct
- to initidate the in.telnetd and in.rlogind daemons).
-
- Once you are in single user mode, you should be able to mount the appropriate
- file systems, and edit the passwd file to your liking.
-
- In the case that there's no root acct, you may be able to boot off of a tape,
- or possibly floppy, boot a miniroot, then mount the file systems, and take
- off. possibly, from a floppy, you could untar, or copy via cpio, the passwd
- file over to /etc/passwd.
-
- if none of these work, rloading is your only option. if you come up with
- something else, i sure would like to know.
