- There is another, fairly recent, alternative.
-
- A number of tape drive companies (Archive, Tandberg, Sankyo) have come
- out with drives which will support the 3M "Magnus" QIC cartridge. These
- will store about 1.3GB on a QIC tape, and are reported to have faster
- data-transfer rates than DATs. They're also considerably cheaper than DATs.
- (Well, the drives are. The 1.3GB media is a bit more expensive than DATs).
-
- One more point in ther favour is that they can read all the smaller QIC
- formats (and write them all except the 60MB). This is an advantage
- because it gives the ability to back up large amounts of data, while
- allowing you to interchange tapes with the large installed base of people
- who already have QIC drives. I don't know of a single vendor who ships
- their applications software on DATs (Dell ships their OS on it), but
- many vendors can ship on QIC carts. Some, like Corel, *only* ship on QIC.
