- There has been quit a bit of discussion on this point here lately.
- Someone suggested looking for a local bus board that ran an ET4000
- chipset. I chose that path for compatibility reasons. ET4000 is
- the best (most widely supported) chipset in the X arena (especially
- in low to no cost arean). My experience have been good. I run
- an 50 Mhx 486-DX local bus board. The manual calls it GA-486US with
- the video card coming from the same supplier a GA-200. Local bus
- slots run at processor speeds so the 50Mhz clock helps. The result
- is impressive. The system has a feel similar in performance to a
- Sun ELC (but with 8 bit color). It is definately not a Sparc 2 GX
- but hey.... One other point to consider is that I use my system
- as a standalone workstation. I am the only user so who cares if
- I burn the CPU running the screen. With a 50Mhz 486 you have a lot
- of CPU to burn.
-
- Burn .... Well that brings up another point. My board is quite
- heat sensitive. I only know of one other system like mine and
- that installation has also reported problems when the ambient temperature
- exceeds 80 deg F. A 20in box fan sitting next to the tower case
- running on a medium setting has eliminated my heat problems.
- I am considering case modifications using muffin fans but I have
- NOT --- NOT EVER (to quote a well know politician) considered giving
- up the speed.
