- I had a compaq special version of a wangtek 5150EQ 150MB 1/4" streaming
- tape drive installed in my esix 4.0.3 system that was causing lots of
- problems, like panics and unwritable tapes, etc., so i pulled it and had
- no tape drive for quite some time. I finally borrowed an archive viper
- 150MB 1/4" SCSI tape drive and used it this weekend to back up my
- system. It seemed to work quite well, streaming, in single user mode,
- about 98% of the time.
-
- However, as soon as tried backing up two remaining, non-critical file
- systems in multi-user mode (using ufsdump), the disk light came on solid
- and the system hung. I had to reset and then afterwards the system
- would always fsck one or more of the file systems and then get a "panic:
- svirttophys() not present". I tried this a number of times with and
- without the tape drive in the scsi chain. I even tried it without about
- 1/2 of the drives (in an external box) and the scsi chain terminated at
- the external 1542a connector. No dice.
-
- I finally stumbled on the solution, which i would like to share with you
- in case you find your self in a similar situation. Even though my
- system has 20MB of memory and is unable to boot off of the supplied boot
- floppy and read the mounted hard drives, one can fsck them with no
- problems! very strange. Anyway, that is what i did. booting off of
- floppy and fsck-ing all of the file systems and then booting from the
- hard drive circumvented the panic and everything appears to be normal.
- Running the backup in multi-user mode again causes the system to hang
- and the panic to reappear upon reboot. Back to the floppy boot and
- fsck.
-
- I don't understand why
- 1) i get the panic,
- 2) i get the panic in multi-user and not in single-user,
- 3) why i can manipulate the hard drives with fsck but not be
- able to mount them and read them even though the floppy
- kernel obviously doesn't have the >16MB patch installed.
- 4) how this would fix the problem, whatever it is.
