- A big piece of the puzzle is "do you want free X, with source?" If this
- is a concern for you, then ET4000 is the best you are going to do. An
- Orchid ProDesigner IIs in my 486/33 box is currently doing 11.6k xStones
- with XFree86 1.1 (beta - expected release at the end of the month). We
- are hoping to eventually squeeze a bit more out, but that's the about the
- best you're going to do.
-
- If you hadn't specified SVR4, there's a free 8514 server under Linux. People
- are looking into the possibility of merging that into XFree86; since it's
- an independent effort, I can't comment on when (or even if) it will be
- available on SVR4.
-
- If free software is not a concern, and you are still shopping for an SVR4,
- then the Dell option with the ATI Ultra is probably your best bet. For
- other SVR4s, there are two commecial options: SGCS and MetroLink. Thomas
- Roell, the author of X386 (the X server in X11R5) is part of SGCS. He
- also put together Dell's package. For those in the know, this speaks volumes.
- MetroLink has been selling commercial X longer, and has support for some
- truly high-end hardware. Here's some contact information:
-
- SGCS:
- email: info@sgcs.com
- (408) 255-9665 (ask for Mark, tell him I sent you :->)
-
- MetroLink:
- info server: info@metrolink.com (put "send index" in email)
- sales: sales@metrolink.com
