- Even though you are correct (to some degree), this is not a very
- useful answer. The file MAY be gone. It depends on how your system
- administrator setup your machine. There are various utilities in existence
- which mimic deleting files and store them elsewhere. In addition many
- sites do regular to semi-regular tape backups. In this way, you can ask
- your administrator to restore your file from tape. Only sites which are
- flagrantly misadminstered will not have some means of retrieving rm'd
- files.
- Finally, without arguing the merits of various file preserving
- methods (where have you been Kamens!? ;-) one very simple thing to do
- it alias the rm command to mv all files to a 'wastebasket' or 'tmp'
- directory and then later clean that directory out manually or with
- a cron job. Obviously, the more creative you are, the more flexibility
- you can add -- and believe me, there are many methods already in
- existence!
