  13. Oh No !! I have trashed my 386BSD partitions (note the plural)

  15. I was trying to get X386 to work. I ran xdm and the system hangs (with a 
  16. blank graphics screen). So hit the reset, wait for the boot up, watch the 
  17. fsck for bad bits in the filesystem .... whats this - NO errors at all ?

  19. I just thought I was lucky. So, once the machine was up into 
  20. /usr/X386/lib/X11/xdm and read the xdm-errors - oopps no video timing in
  21. Xconfig so changed to ../etc and read the XConfog.notes files with more.

  23. After and bit of reading (backwards and forwards) more suddenly exited in
  24. mid document and gave me a prompt. I tried the more again and got a 'no such
  25. file' type of error.

  27. ls revealed all the filenames where scrambled - every other letter a ? character.
  28. I then changed to / and did ls - oh dear .... I got a panic: bad dir and corrupted
  29. node messages and the machine crashed.

  31. After that I tryed to reboot but the disk wouldn't access, the machine would only 
  32. use the a: drive. In desperation - I went to bed !
  33.  
  34. This morning however, I tryed the fixit floppy and manually run fsck on 3 of
  35. my partitions - no errors at all. I checked the disklabel - fine. So I tryed a
  36. reboot - and hey presto ! One BSD system, working fine !
  37.  
  38. Help me people ! What is going on ? Do I have a dodgy disk/controller ?? In there
  39. a bug in the filesystem (or in more !!) or was it a glitch ??!!

  41. Any ideas would be helpful - I don't want to go though that again !!!!!
