- First off, a 486/33 is not really an "AT" clone. ATs are traditionally
- 286-class machines, at least in my book. It's quite possible you have an
- AT keyboard with an AT bus, but this doesn't make your box an AT clone.
-
- Secondly, if you want to get AIX for your PC so you can move work between
- RS6k and your PC, or if you want to learn more about AIX at home, you're
- probably better off going with SVR4 and something like gcc for cross-
- compiling. Or if you want a Mach kernel, you can go for <laughs>
- Windows NT or NeXTStep, but this is probably more masochistic than PC AIX.
-
- As far as hardware requirements, I was running AIX on a 16 MB 386/33
- with 400 MB of disk. However, the OS had enough stability problems
- that it was quickly dumped. Though I've heard that there are lots of
- developers off in IBM-land in Florida working on a better AIX for PCs,
- I certainly wouldn't get AIX for a PC (or RT, for that matter) where
- better alternatives clearly exist. Clearly, the most important bit of
- hardware in a PC running AIX is an easily-accessible on/off switch.
