  13. New upgraded versions of the harvard family of bibliography styles are available
  14. in pub/harvard on archsci.arch.su.oz.au (129.78.66.1).

  16. The following enhancements have been made:
  17.  
  18. - new macros \citeyear (thanks to Renate Schmidt (schmidt@mpi-sb.mpg.de) and
  19.   \citename have been added
  20. - citation styles agsm, dcu and kluwer have been altered so that author lists
  21.   greater than length 2 are only abbreviated to the et al form if no confusion
  22.   or ambibuity will result, e.g. 
  23.     Smith, Jones and Bloggs (1980), and
  24.     Smith, Jones and Abercrombe (1980)
  25.   will not be abbreviated as they both abbreviate to Smith et al (1980). The
  26.   previous versions of the styles would have abbreviated these to
  27.   Smith et al (1980b) and Smith et al (1980a). These changes have been made in
  28.   response to a number of postings lamenting this behaviour.
  29. - as a side affect of this change *.bbl files will be smaller as the optional
  30.   abbreviated citation is now only used if the abbreviated citation differs from
  31.   full citation.
  32. - the documentation has been changed as necessary

  34. The relevant files are:
  35.   harvard.sty - new macro package
  36.   harvard.tex - documentation
  37.   harvard.bib - necessary bib file for harvard.tex
  38.   agsm.bst, dcu.bst, kluwer.bst and nederlands.bst - bibtex style files

  45. P.S. Thought is being given to the use of initials to disambiguate names.

  47. P.P.S. Other suggestions for enhancements to the harvard family are welcomed.
  48.        Of particular relevance are *.bst files for styles that are similar to
  49.        but not identical to those already provided.
