- Hello,
-
- Can someone please tell me what stupid thing I am doing? I
- have a SPARC-1e with a 150M Wangtek Tape Drive and a 330M Micropolis
- HD (model 1578-15). Now here is the picture. I don't know if
- the tape drive is terminated or not. I have my Sparc configured
- to sd-targets 31204567 and st-targets 45670123. The SD is set
- to device 3 and the ST is set to device 4. Now, when I have
- only the HD hooked up with no terminators, just a cable going
- straight from the SCSI port on my Sparc to the drive and I do,
- 'probe-scsi', it says, "Device 3 Disk 0 MICROP 1578-15" and then
- some other stuff. When I have just the tape drive hooked up
- with no terminators and do probe-scsi, I get, "Device 4 Removable
- Tape 0 WANGTEK" and some other numbers.
- Now for the fun part. I know the drive is terminated and
- because I can load OS from tape, I am assuming that the tape
- drive is terminated as well. (Although a sticker on it says
- that it isn't). Now, when I try hooking them up in the
- order of "SPARC-->ST-->SD" and do probe-scsi, it gives the
- same information for the tape drive but then it says, "Disk
- Controller 0" on the HD and gives information totally different
- than when the drive is hooked up alone. Also, I can format and
- such on the drive when it is on the bus alone but not when the
- tape drive is connected too.
- Is the problem that both devices are terminated or is
- the problem that my tape drive should come after my hard drive
- on the daisy-chain? OR is it some mysterious third problem?
- I have checked out the drive. It works fine. (Booted up on
- a Mac) and "format" on my SPARC didn't find any fatal errors
- on it. It's a friend's drive and he's been using it without
- problems on a Macintosh. The Sparc seems to be in good order,
- I have ran all the extended tests on it and it checks out fine,
- and the tape drive seems to work fine as well. I can load
- a bootable version of MUNIX from it and run it in RAM. In fact,
- the only way I was able to format the drive was to boot up
- with the tape drive, then disconnect the drive and connect the
- HD so I could format it.
- While this may work fine to do stuff like that, it's gonna
- be a real bitch to copy SunOs from tape to drive that way and
- make backups virtually impossible. At any rate, I am reasonably
- certain I have just done something stupid on the SCSI bus.
- So could someone please tell me what? Tahnks in advance.
