  13. Hello, I have a Seagate ST1239NS that has started acting up.
  14. I had cleanly halted its Sun Sparc I+ running SunOS 4.1 to add 
  15. an Uniterruptable Power Supply. While I had it down, I replaced 
  16. the jerry-rigged mounting bracket of the 1239NS with a sun-issue 
  17. one. When I tried to reboot the machine displayed the pre-boot banner, 
  18. (you know, that =~ 4-line header before the "loading vmunix" message 
  19. appears) then froze. It didn't even attempt to load vmunix. I tried to 
  20. capture diagnostic messages routed to ttya but evidentally my dumb terminal 
  21. and printer aren't the proper sort of hardware.

  23. If I remove the disk the machine works again. If I move the disk
  24. to another Sun (I've tried a II running SunOS 4.1.1 and another
  25. I+ running 4.1.2) The same thing happens. Actually the II's screen
  26. refuses to even light up. (Yes, it was on and the brightness/contrast
  27. knobs were adjusted.) The drive had worked just fine before shut down.

  29. SO, has anyone encountered this before? What could be going wrong with
  30. the drive?? I tried calling Seagate but their phone support is now
  31. a toll call. I could very well pay for the drive before I got connected
  32. to a human :-)
