- Hello, I have a Seagate ST1239NS that has started acting up.
- I had cleanly halted its Sun Sparc I+ running SunOS 4.1 to add
- an Uniterruptable Power Supply. While I had it down, I replaced
- the jerry-rigged mounting bracket of the 1239NS with a sun-issue
- one. When I tried to reboot the machine displayed the pre-boot banner,
- (you know, that =~ 4-line header before the "loading vmunix" message
- appears) then froze. It didn't even attempt to load vmunix. I tried to
- capture diagnostic messages routed to ttya but evidentally my dumb terminal
- and printer aren't the proper sort of hardware.
-
- If I remove the disk the machine works again. If I move the disk
- to another Sun (I've tried a II running SunOS 4.1.1 and another
- I+ running 4.1.2) The same thing happens. Actually the II's screen
- refuses to even light up. (Yes, it was on and the brightness/contrast
- knobs were adjusted.) The drive had worked just fine before shut down.
-
- SO, has anyone encountered this before? What could be going wrong with
- the drive?? I tried calling Seagate but their phone support is now
- a toll call. I could very well pay for the drive before I got connected
- to a human :-)
-
- Thanks for any advice you may have,
- Rich
