- I have an NEC CDR-72 CD-ROM reader connected to the SCSI bus on my
- Sparcstation SLC (running SunOS 4.1.2). It is the only device on the
- bus and is properly terminated.
-
- I re-built the kernel to include support for the sr0 device. When I
- use the monitor command `probe-scsi' I get this response:
- Target 6
- Unit 0 Removable Read Only Device NEC CD-ROM DRIVE
-
- When I reboot the SLC, I get a couple of messages related to the
- presence of the CDR-72 on the bus:
-
- esp0: Target 6 rejects our message 'NO-OP'
- sr0: Unrecongized Vendor 'NEC ', product 'CD-ROM DRIVE 'sr0 at esp0
- target 6 lun 0
-
- So, I am sure that I have the SCSI address of the CDR-72 set properly.
-
- The drive also has a couple of other configuration switches:
- `For SCSI data bus parity check' (set to the `enabled' position)
- `For arbitration system use' (set to the `enabled' position)
-
- I have been attempting to test out the operation of the drive by
- booting from it (using a Solaris 1.0.1 disc), using the monitor command:
- boot sd(0,6,2)
- When I do this, the disc spins and I get the following messages:
- booting from sd(0,6,2)
- Bad magic number in disk label!
- The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.
-
- I have called Sun technical support, and what their engineer told me
- basically is, "It's not a Sun drive: if it works, great; if it doesn't,
- you're on your own."
-
- Has anybody ever successfully used one of these NEC drives on a Sun
- workstation? Does anybody have any ideas what I need to do to get this
- to work? I would appreciate any help anyone can give. Responses via
- e-mail and I'll post the outcome if anybody wants me to.
-
- Thanks in advance!
