- Hi, I am trying to figure out what kind of protection from voltage
- spikes should we have for a sparcstation (there will be IPC, IPX,
- CDROM, 8mm tape, and 1.3Gb disk). These will be installed in Moscow,
- where the power supply is *very* unstable (just like all other things).
-
- Can anyone write me what the input voltage should be?
-
- Here is the list of questions -- thanks in advance.
-
-
-
-
- 1. Long term voltage jumps
-
- a) What is the allowed range dU of the value of the incoming voltage
- -- whether the computer will be working well if the voltage be, say,
- 10% lower or higher;
-
- b) If it is allowed to have the voltage, say, 10% lower sometimes,
- then what is the allowed timescale dt of such jumps -- is it ok if the
- voltage drops by 10% during, say, 0.01 sec or it must go down more
- smoothly -- for computer to continue to work without shutdown?
-
- Like this ________ or like this ________
- | \
- | \
- |______________ \___________
-
- | |
- |-dt-|
-
-
- this is the
- timescale I mean
-
- -- is this timescale at all important?
-
- c) when the system is down and the voltage rises from 0 to the normal
- value -- at what value the computer begins to reboot?
-
-
-
-
- 2. Short-term voltage jumps
-
- Can a sparcstation withstand a short spike dU in the voltage? If so,
- what is the
-
- a) maximum dU and
-
- b) minimum dU allowed?
-
- c) what is the critical value of dU*t, where dU is in volts and t is
- the timelength of a spike?
-
-
-
-
- 3. The time required for system to halt
-
-
- a) What is the time t1 required for the system to shutdown without a
- physical damage for the disks or whatever, but with a possible loss of
- information?
-
- b) What is the time t2 required for the server to shutdown without a
- loss of any information, files, etc?
