- Since there is a demand for "Professional Quality DAT Tapes" (of the
- audio persuasion) here (we run a Music Technology course), I tried
- these in our DAT drive - an HP35480A with compression switched on.
-
- One set of HHb tapes (about which we were fed the standard story
- that all the tape is made in one factory and then just shoved into
- appropriate packaging for audio/data grade) were so poor that I was
- unable to complete a write cycle to either of our 2 samples (I was
- intending to do a set of read/write cycles).
-
- Sony professional audio grade seem fine.
-
- However the cost advantage is not that much 5 pounds-ish for audio
- as against 7 pounds-ish for data (Sony DG-60M) in the UK, so I'm
- sticking with data grade unless I really need some in a hurry (there
- are local stocks of audio grade).

-
- It would be nice to know which manufacturers. Then again by
- choosing my suppliers I can get Sony tapes as cheap as any of the
- other brands around, and they have given no problems except one
- physical tape jam - I think due to the user rather than the tape.
-
- For the UK try contacting
- Direct Disk Supplies
- 081 977 8777
-
- Even they need to go through the explanation that you need 4mm DAT
- tapes, not Exabytes etc etc etc :-)
