- Well, yes. There are really two issues here:
-
- 1. Should you manage (or use) the system exclusively with a GUI - like the
- administators tool or workspace. I will not be part of that flame ware,
- as it is too hot in here already.
-
- 2. Should users be able to run toys like the sgi mailbox with an opening door
- or the sgi desk clock over an X-terminal ?
-
- Now for toys like this it is just silly that they can't, but it is almost
- as silly to assign somebody to port the desk clock to use plein X rather than
- gl. What could be useful would be to have a gl to X translator, but that is
- difficult to do for SGI. Not that the code is so difficult to do, but because
- it comes from SGI people would run powerflip or revolve from an Indigo-server
- over X, see that it crawls rather than runs, and decide not to buy SGI machines
- because "they are so slow".
-
- In this dilemma it is easier to explain that you cannot do that over an
- X-terminal, which will be believed, rather than blame the X-terminal as
- being too slow, which will be seen as a lame excuse.
-
- From a user's point of view, it means sticking with utilities like oclock and
- xbiff in cases the graphics are not critical, and not get used to toys that
- don't work everywhere. For powerflip you will just have to buy a machine that
- is capable of running it.
