- Our Machine is a SGI 320VGX running Irix v 4.0.1 with a 150 megabyte internal
- tape drive.
-
- On our VAX regardless of the tape drive ( be it reel or cassette ) I can do
- the following.
-
- Create a archive ( vax save_set ). This archive can be of any size. I may
- put different archives ( vax save_sets ) on a tape. Archives ( vax save_sets )
- may span multiple tapes.
-
- When I wish to extract data I need only start on the tape that the data is
- on. Not like tar where I have to go though n tapes to get at the data. Also
- on the VMS BACKUP untility one can append archives ( vax save_sets ) to
- the end of a tape. This saves money. At this time I have unload partial a
- tape and reload with the new data just to get some value out of the tapes.
-
- Are their Unix utilites as advanced as the VMS BACKUP utility for saving
- data? Are their any tricks or tips to get this job done?
-
- Thank you,
-
