-
- There are two programs from SGI which will play audio
- CD's on the CD-ROM drive.
-
- cdplayer will run on all SGI systems. You listen to music
- from the headphone or audio out jacks located on the back
- of the drive unit itself.
-
- CDman runs on SGI systems with audio support (Indigo, 4D/35).
- It actually reads the audio CD information over the SCSI
- bus, and uses the system audio hardware to play the music.
- Because the music is actually being processed by the system,
- you can also choose to record your music to a file, and
- mix it with other audio channels (i.e. instant karaoke
- machine).
-
- Both programs provide a database capability. The first
- time you insert a particular disc, you enter the title,
- artist and track listing. From then on, both
- programs will automatically recognize the disc and
- display artist, title and track names while the disc is
- playing. Here at SGI, we have an NFS-mountable database
- containing several hundred (probably thousands by now)
- discs entered into the system by everyone using the
- programs.
-
- Both of these programs are available with the Digital
- Media tools, which (I believe) are available separately
- or as part of the 4.0.5E software release. It may be
- available in other releases; I'm getting confused with
- our software release plan as well. Contacting the
- Software Express line at 1-800-800-7441 (U.S.) should
- get you better information than I can provide about
- packaging and pricing (which for the tools I believe
- are very cheap).
