  20. Having been an Audio DAT user for over 5 years and an Indigo user
  21. for about 3 months, I haven't encountered an audible nor any other
  22. critical error with DAT tape.  I use various length of tape (60, 90,
  23. 120 min.) manufactured by Sony, Panasonic, etc. but they all seems
  24. to be working fine also on Indigo.

  26. I don't know the difference between DAT tapes for audio and for data
  27. except there are special tape length for data storage (i.e. 90 meter).
  28. It is indeed confusing that there are DAT tapes for general use,
  29. data storage use and for professional recording!  ( What about
  30. "professional" data storage? :-p)

  32. I >>personally<< think you can share DAT audio tape for data storage
  33. with Indigo considering that SGI's DAT drive switches it's mode
  34. between audio player/recorder and data streamer in error correction 
  35. coding strategies and other stuffs.  In other words, you can get the
  36. higher data reliability in data storage mode even if you use a tape
  37. for audio use as well.  Maybe the situation might change when SGI's
  38. DAT implements data compression.

  40. I am not sure about the life expectancy of DAT tape, but they are
  41. designed to endure hundreds of scanning pass by the rotary heads
  42. and the recorded data are supposed to remain readable for almost
  43. hundred of years without overwriting.
